Micah 6:8 Meaning: What Does God Actually Want From You?

We think God wants more from us. More sacrifice, more performance, more proof. Micah 6:8 says otherwise.

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”Micah 6:8 (ESV)

The question behind the verse

Read the two verses right before it. The people are asking God what will finally be enough. Thousands of rams? Rivers of oil? Their firstborn child?

They assumed God was keeping score and the price kept going up. That's the same trap a lot of us live in. If I just do more, give more, grind more, then maybe I'll be enough.

Three things, not three thousand

God's answer is almost disappointing in how simple it is. Do justice. Love kindness (many translations say mercy). Walk humbly with your God.

Justice is how you treat people when it costs you something. Mercy is how you treat people when they don't deserve it. And humility is how you walk with God: not running ahead of Him, not performing for Him, just walking with Him one step at a time.

Why this one hit home for me

I'm guilty of the performance version. Trying to earn it, trying to prove it. This verse cuts all of that down to a walk. Not a sprint, not a show. A daily walk, with Him, in the right direction.

Sit with this

Where do you need more humility today?

Open your Bible and read Micah 6:6-8. Sit with it a minute, then go.
