1 Corinthians 16:13-14 Meaning: Strength Without Love Is Just Hard

Four commands that sound like a soldier. Then Paul lands the plane: do all of it in love.

“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (ESV)

Four commands

Be watchful is gregoreo: stay awake, keep watch. It's what a watchman does on the wall before the sun comes up. Jesus used it in Gethsemane: watch and pray (Matthew 26:41).

Stand firm is steko: hold your ground.

Act like men is one Greek word, andrizomai, and it only shows up here in the New Testament. The Greek Old Testament uses it in the charge over Joshua: be strong and courageous (Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:6-9).

Be strong is krataioo, and it's passive: be made strong. The strength is given, not self-made.

Then: in love

Verse 14 lands it. Let all that you do be done in love. The word is agape, the same love Paul spent all of 1 Corinthians 13 defining. He was writing to a divided, proud church, and he bracketed the soldier commands with love on purpose.

Both, not one

Strength without love is just hard. Love without strength gives way. God wants both. That's the kind of man, father, and leader worth becoming.

Sit with this

Where do you need to stand firm today, in love?

Open your Bible and read 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. Sit with it a minute, then go.
